Old buildings need a different approach

Ledbury has more genuinely old property than anywhere else we work — timber-framed houses on
Church Lane and around the Market House, and a lot of listed and conservation-area homes. Tiling
in them is a different job. Walls are rarely plumb and almost never flat, lime plaster won’t
take modern adhesive directly, and timber floors move with the seasons.

What that means in practice: we set out from the eye line rather than from a wall that isn’t
straight, we board out where the substrate can’t be trusted instead of tiling onto it and hoping,
and on old floors we fit a decoupling membrane so seasonal movement doesn’t end up in your
grout. On a listed property we’ll also tell you honestly when a tiled finish isn’t the right
answer for a wall and what is.

Plenty of Ledbury is Victorian terrace and modern estate, where the work is more
straightforward — solid floors that need levelling, plasterboard walls that need the right
primer, bathrooms being brought up to date.
